Over 100 people set out from NCWest Station and walked the 8 miles of the old railway to Rathkeale in very mild conditions on December 27th. All expressed delight at the new N21 underpass at Castlematrix, Rathkeale which has just been provided by Lk. Co. Co. under the Smarter Travel Programme. The provision of complimentary refreshments by Rathkeale House Hotel and return coach by Coach House Travel was much appreciated by all participants. |

National Trails Day on the Great Southern Trail. Over 60 people participated in the 10km walk along the GST between Abbeyfeale and Templeglantine on Sunday last. The dull day did not dampen the spirited group who were rewarded at journey's end with a feast of tea, scones and a variety of cakes and tart at Halla Inse Bán. Míle buíochas le Máire Ní Chearmada agus a lucht tacaíochta for preparing such a generous repast. The return to Abbeyfeale was courtesy of Phelim's Coach House Travel. |

At the Biennial European Greenways International Ceremony held on 8th September at Epinal, France, awards were presented to the representatives of five European countries in recognition of their achievements in the promotion of safe, off road recreational trails. Ireland's Great Southern Trail was the recipient of the Jury's Special Prize for its 20 years campaign to convert the old Limerick-Tralee railway into a greenway. M. Gilbert Perrin, President of European Greenways Association, in his address emphasised the importance of maintaining such vital corridors in public ownership and encouraged their use as a means of healthy living through outdoor pursuits. |
